Frequently Asked Questions

Why is HDPE used for bottles?

Advantages of using HDPE for bottles are with it being cost-effective, can withstand temperatures from -148 to 176 degrees Fahrenheit, non-leaching, UV-resistant, dishwasher safe, resistant to most chemical solvents, stiff material.

What are HDPE bottles?

High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) is a thermoplastic polymer made from petroleum, it is currently one of the most versatile plastic materials used in a wide variety of applications, including plastic bottles and supplements jars, milk jugs, shampoo bottles, bleach bottles, cutting boards, and piping. Qualities of HDPE such as outstanding tensile strength and large strength-to-density ratio, high-impact resistance and melting point mean that HDPE plastic is the best choice for many of these applications.

Why is HDPE used for shampoo bottles?

HDPE (high-density plastic) is very stiff, has a good temperature resistance, very good water vapour barrier and high chemical resistance, making it perfect for shampoo bottles.

Are HDPE bottles reusable?

Opaque plastic bottles, often used for milk, juices, detergent, yogurt and margarine tubs, belong to the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) category of plastics. The American Chemistry Council and Care2 agree that it is safe to reuse these bottles after you have finished the original contents.

Is HDPE safe for food?

Many food containers are manufactured with HDPE, symbol #2. HDPE represents high-density polyethylene. There is a common misconception that all containers made of white plastic or HDPE plastic bearing recycle symbol 2 are food grade containers however not all of them are.

What does HDPE plastic stand for?

High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) is a thermoplastic polymer made from petroleum, it is currently one of the most versatile plastic materials used in a wide variety of applications due to it’s qualities.

Which is better PET or HDPE?

HDPE is a high-density plastic that is very stiff, has a good temperature resistance, very good water vapour barrier and high chemical resistance. By contrast, PET plastics are highly transparent in appearance, available in different colours, lightweight and tough against gases and liquids. PET is also highly resistant to diluted acids, oils and alcohols. Based on the different qualities of these products you will be able to determine which plastic is best for your application.

Can HDPE hold alcohol?

In short, HDPE is suitable for storing alcohol and products containing ethanol such as hand sanitiser.

How long does HDPE plastic last?

HDPE plastics will degrade in just under 100 years depending on the thickness of the plastic used, it is probably also the most recognized recyclable plastic and takes much less energy to recycle than to manufacture from ‘virgin’ materials.

Is all HDPE BPA free?

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is, like BPA, a material derived from petroleum. The difference is that HDPE plastics are completely free from BPA and are therefore safe for applications that directly impact humans.

Does HDPE leach?

Plastics in category #2 HD Polyethylene (HDPE) can be potentially toxic to humans when left in the environment as they may leach when exposed to UV, heat and over time from natural breakdown.
